Le remplissage du r\u00e9servoir d&rsquo;une surface de 25 000 ha et d&rsquo;un volume de 4 150 Millions de m3 a d\u00e9but\u00e9 le 8 fevrier 2002 et \u00a0inauguration de l&rsquo;ouvrage a eu lieu en 2004. Avec une hauteur de presque 100 m, le barrage sert \u00e0 la production hydro\u00e9lectrique (240 MW) et pour l&rsquo;irrigation d&rsquo;immense surfaces agricoles dans la r\u00e9gion semi-aride de l&rsquo;Alentejo. \u00a0La commission europ\u00e9enne (qui a pourtant financ\u00e9 le projet) a constat\u00e9 un grand risque de d\u00e9sertification et de salinisation.
